Butterfly photography will show you a new world

When you go out looking for butterflies to photograph, and following one of the golden rules: move slowly, you will begin to notice a whole new micro world, full of colors, textures and shapes. Plants, flowers, aracnids and insects will attract your attention and will be perfect subjects to photograph.

Small leafhooper, subfamily Cicadellidae

In the planet it is estimated between 4 and 6 million of insect species, of which only one million have been classified. We have 17.500 species of butterflies, but there are over 150.000 species of moths and 360.000 species of beetles, so the probability of seeing other insects is greater than to see butterflies. Recent figures indicate that there are more than 200 million insects for every human on the planet, so we are not alone in the field.

In cold or rainy days you won’t find too many butterflies, because they don’t go flying, so photographing insects is a good choice for the butterfly photographer.

Know the right date in the year to find a butterfly

In some species of butterflies knowing the exact time of the year when they appear is important, some species are very specific and are linked to a plant life cycle, so there are dates when you see lots of butterfly of the same species, but at other times of the year you see just a few individuals or just nothing.
There are also plants that bloom at a specific date and attract lots of butterflies, so knowing this will help you be more successful taking butterfly photos.
Several Rekoa meton in the blooming vine

Rekoa meton

Panthiades bathildis

The flower of this vine blooms in October and attracts many different species of butterflies, especially in the Lycaenidae family, I took pictures of 16 species in one day.
This Eunica tatila butterfly was across the road at a length of 3 kilometers (1.86 miles), it was difficult to take photos from other species by their abundance and active flight, 15 days later it was almost impossible to see a specimen.

Eunica tatila, detail

In a February weekend this Emesis cypria was very abundant, when in other dates they are not as common.

Emesis cypria, abudant in this place in february

Emesis cypria
Also there is a relationship between the presence of butterflies and rainy or dry seasons of the year, knowing the abundance of species is achieved by going to the same place many times over time or by asking locals.

When I know that this cycle exist (butterfly or plant) and I want to take more photos of a specific butterfly, I'll look at my pictures and the date it was taken to prepare to go to the same place on that date again.

Why articulated screen - Part II Above your head

Continuing with my recommendation to use a camera with articulated LCD screen for taking pictures of butterflies other situation where this type of display stands out is when the butterfly is high above the head. (See post Why articulated screen – Part I Ground level)
Under these conditions only with a hinged screen and a good autofocus is possible to obtain a sharp picture.
There are many occasions where the butterfly lands on a flower, a tree or any high place and only with this type of display you can make the parallel between the camera and the butterfly, and get a photo with the insect completely focused. (See tip 1 Keep a parallel (butterfly – camera) always in mind).

How to photograph transparent butterflies (Clearwings)

In the Neotropic you will find a good amount of clearwings or transparent butterflies, most of them belong to the butterfly family nymphalidae (brushfoots), and especially in the ithomidaes and satyrinidaes.

Satyr, Pseudohaeterea hypaesia

Ithomidae,Episcada clausina
They live and fly usually in shaded places inside the forest or very close to the forest floor, then this place is dimly lit which forces to use flash in most cases.
In these conditions and even in good light, normally the camera autofocus doesn’t works well because it fails focusing through the wing of the butterfly, one option is to try to direct the focus to the veins of the wings or the head, If it still does not work it is best to focus manually.

When possible, try to use tip with and without flash to get the correct color of the butterfly, as the flash tends to create a glow in the wings and obscures transparency.
Pseudohaeterea hypaesia, without flash

Pseudohaeterea hypaesia, with flash

Normally, these butterflies do not fly long distances, so if you follow them patiently and walking slowly, you will manage to get a good picture.

Clearwing, with flash

Butterfly databases as a conservation tool

When I take pictures of butterflies, they must have a purpose and mine is to use these photos for environmental education, the future goal is to publish a book on butterflies, but immediately the purpose is the organization and classification of butterflies photographed in a database.
Birds and butterflies in many places are the animals more representative and more visible, thus making people to know and be aware of their existence in a place, is a good tool to avoid or minimize the destruction of their habitat.
I created a database in Microsoft Access program that allows me to relate the different species of butterflies to the places they inhabit, as well as use it to organize photos of each species, so I can get multiple reports with images.
I can generate reports in different ways, from a book by way of a field guide of butterflies from Colombia to a report of only one species. Until February 2011 I have recorded 2.161 species of butterflies and 780 species of this have a photo. (I don’t know of other butterfly database for Colombia, it is estimated that there are over 3,000 species in our country)

Field guide
It is possible to print reports from a locality in different sizes and presentation, these reports I give to people who live on this site as a way to teach them about all the butterflies that they have and tell them to protect all the plants that give the butterflies the hosting and the opportunity of reproduction.
Report of a locality 2 columns

Also, I can generate and print full reports of a family, subfamily, tribe, genus etc of butterflies for identification or research purpose.
Report of Riodinidae family

If you create awareness of the biodiversity of a place, it will be harder to destroy.

Report of a locality 4 columns

Report of Satyrinae subfamily

Use support and look for stability

I try to use tripod for most of my macro or butterflies photos, but I almost always only use it as a support for my arms, my hands or the camera. These because in several situations with the butterfly photography you have to be fast, so putting and taking the camera from the tripod, set the distance, focusing, etc., sometimes it takes too long.

I am getting support in the tripod and the neck strap

You can’t always use a tripod for support, then you should look for tree trunks, rocks, your shoes, the floor, your neck, your body, the difference between a photo with support and without is extreme, even if you use flash, once you get support you can make a better composition.

I am getting support in the trunk and the neck strap
Always try to use the neck strap, not only for support but to prevent the fall of the camera.
Many times the wind moves too much the leaf or the branch where the butterfly is, in those cases I invert the use of the tripod and I put it in such a way that gives stability to the leaf, this must be done very slowly and gently in order to avoid the insect to fly.

Use the tripod to avoid the movement with the wind

Siproeta stelenes

When the butterfly is in the floor sometimes it is wet or dusty so I use my hand or my shoe as a support to provide stability and protect the camera.

Use your hand or shoe as support at floor level

For me, a tripod should be lightweight to handle it easily; this helps me when I'm walking by the roadside to flush insects moving leaves gently as I walk.
I prefer a light tripod, flushing insects

Utilice soporte y busque estabilidad
