Take butterflies with the wings open and closed

To be able to identify some species of butterflies you need to take pictures of these with open wings (dorsal view) and closed wings (ventral view).
Marpesia chiron, dorsal
Marpesia chiron, ventral
In the morning when the butterflies have not yet come to fly the majority of them have their wings closed.
It is important to know in each family or subfamily of butterflies which is the most common position, and you should take more pictures if they give you the opportunity to take the butterfly in a position that is less frequently used.
Families that are often difficult to see or take pictures with open wings are: Pieridae and Lycaenidae. Also some Hesperiidae, the Riodinidae genus Euselasia and the genus Caligo in the Nymphalidae.
There are other butterflies that with patience you can take pictures with their wings open as species of the subfamily Charaxinae that open their wings in the sun.
In a smaller number of butterfly species it is more difficult to take the picture closed than open, as in the case of the genus Hamadryas.

Abierta y cerrada
