Keep a parallel (butterfly – camera) always in mind

When you are taking macro photos the depth of field is very small, therefore photos of insects or objects can be easily out of focus.

If you want to get completely focused pictures of butterflies, you should always try to put the camera parallel to the wings, in that way you get the entire insect in focus, you draw two imaginary lines one in the butterfly plane you are aiming and the other in front of the lens or the camera sensor.

In the ventral shot focusing in the head area will let you get the eyes, legs, wings and at least one antenna in focus, because almost always these parts of the butterfly are in the same plane.

This is especially true in ventral (completely closed wings) or dorsal (full open wings) where there are just a few millimeters in depth.

In dorsal shots I focus always in the head in that way I am framing the butterfly center and if it is fully open it should be level and you will get both wings in focus.

Mantenga un paralelo entre la mariposa y la cámara

Cuando Usted está tomando fotos macro la profundidad de campo es muy pequeña, por lo tanto los insectos u objetos pueden quedar fácilmente desenfocados.

Si Usted quiere obtener fotos de mariposas completamente enfocadas, debe tratar siempre de poner la cámara de forma paralela a la mariposa, esto es especialmente cierto en los tomas dorsales (alas abiertas) o ventral (alas cerradas), porque las mariposas al ser simétricas y con sólo unos pocos milímetros de profundidad permiten fácilmente obtener al insecto totalmente enfocado.

En la toma ventral yo enfoco el área de la cabeza, esto permite obtener los ojos, patas, alas y por lo menos una antena enfocada, porque casi siempre estas partes de la mariposa están en el mismo plano.

Yo mantengo estas líneas paralelas en la mente, trazando imaginariamente este paralelismo entre la parte delantera de la lente y la mariposa y una vez esta posición se cumpla antes de tomar la foto enfoco siempre en la cabeza, de esa manera encuadro el centro de la mariposa, especialmente en los disparos dorsales y si la mariposas está completamente abierta estará nivelada y así se obtendrán las dos alas enfocadas.
