Know the behavior Hesperiidae (skippers)

This family of butterflies is characterized by antennas with a hook at the tip. They have thick bodies, large heads and fly very fast.

By the number of species Hesperiidae is the third largest family of butterflies, in the planet there are a total of 4.127 species and in the Neotropic there are 2.365 species (57%), so finding species of this family is very easy in this region.
Skippers don’t like the flash, so much of them fly away when you shoot with flash and most of the time you get a ghost or an empty leaf. My recommendation is that you take the first photos without flash and only when you assured the first photos you use the flash. I always wonder how they can react so fast.

Skippers are attracted by the bird droppings where they get some proteins and minerals. The main color in these droppings is the white, so they are attracted to any white in the leaves or in the floor.

Some skippers usually perch on twigs or leaves and then fly back to the same place frequently, so if you are patient and wait, the opportunity will be provided to take their picture.

There are also some Hesperiidae that hide under the leaves, so knowing the species that have this behavior will let you follow them when they land on a leaf.

Change the angle

When you are taking photos specially in dark or shaded places, and with the butterfly in ventral positions (butterfly with the wings closed) small changes in the angle related with the butterfly will give different backgrounds, so you can move slightly up or down or right to left and that gives interesting differences with the background.
The photos I post here have not been modified by changing the light or colors, just did some rotation and cropping to make them comparable.

Shoot butterflies from both sides

Butterflies in nature have many enemies and all the attacks in their life are reflected in the condition of the wings.

Therefore it is useful to take photos from both sides of a butterfly (especially in the ventral photos) because in the field is not easy to note that the wings are broken or worn on the side that you are taking the photo and very often the other side is in good shape.

Sometimes the broken side allows you to see what is inside in the other wing and that is very useful in some species for identification.

The broken wing lets you see the blue inside.

If the identification of the butterfly is one of your goals to take the picture, the ventral and dorsal shots are very useful for a correct identification and some small clues like the difference in this sulphur wings taken from both sides lets you be sure of the ID.

Get the butterfly eyes in focus

Depending of the angle that you are taking the photo to a butterfly all or part of the insect will be in focus, the only thing that you should keep in mind is that the eyes must be in focus, the difference is too big when you see a focused or unfocused head.

If the eyes are out of focus the photo just don’t look right.
The antennas are important also, it is good to have at least one antenna in focus but that will depend of the angle, like in a front photo usually the antennas are out of focus.

With and without flash

I use this tip of taking a photo with and without flash in order to get the right color in some species, usually when you are in shaded places, like inside a jungle, you need to use the flash, but the flash changes the color and some details in the butterfly wings, so I try to take some photos without flash to get other details and colors, even though that obligates me to use a low f-stop number and a very slow speed that usually gives photos without good focus or blurred.

This is especially important in transparent butterflies like the ones in the subfamily ithomidae where taking with and without the flash will help in the process of identification.

Another condition where I use this technique is in bright sun light in order to get some details or to avoid some shades.

In another species like the ones with metal or iridescent colors the flash light brings the color depending of the angle in which the light hits the scales in the wing.

Note the butterfly antennas

When I already have the first photos of the butterfly (at least one assured) I start observing the position of the antennas.
Some species move the antenna up and down when they are resting in a leaf, so I try to take the photo when the antennas are up or at least level and higher than the butterfly eyes level, this happens a lot with hesperidaes (skippers), lycaenides (blues) and ithomides (clear wings), dismorphidae (subfamily of whites).

Different positions of the antenna, Anteros kupris
In other butterfly species that don’t move so much the antennas I try to take the antennas  from an angle that show both of them, not completely aligned as if it where only one antenna.
When you are taking a dorsal shot a V shape in the antenna is what I like, for me this V shape looks symmetric, so I look at the movement of the antennas and shot when they are leveled.

Dynamine postverta, antennas not leveled

Dynamine postverta, antennas leveled

ButterMate 2010 11

This section is intended for putting photos of butterflies or moths that have a scientific importance as species or that the photo is of good quality in colors, composition etc. I will invite other photographers to participate in this section.
I choose first this longwing (subfamily heliconidae, of the Nymphalidae family) for being one of the genus that only lives in the neotropic and Colombia is one of the countries with more species in this subfamily.
The scientific also says that these are the most intelligent of all butterflies (not absolutely sure of this affirmation).
This species have attractive colors because that tell their enemies, specially birds, that they have bad flavor, and this surviving strategy allows them to live 6 or more months, probably the most in any butterfly.

Heliconius melpomene
